After the second postponement of the Palio, the Mayor of Siena, Nicoletta Fabio, has signed a new ordinance allowing the race to take place today, Thursday, July 4th. The schedule set for yesterday, Wednesday, July 3rd, is confirmed for today as well, as decided by the municipal administration after consultation with the Deputies of the Festival, the Captains of the ten Contrade participating in the Palio, the Prefect, and the Chief of Police of Siena, to ensure the safety and preservation of the Festival.

July 4th Schedule

The horses will leave the Cortile del Podestà at 7:00 PM. The day’s program, as established by the ordinance, is as follows:

  • 5:10 PM: Clearing of the track.
  • 6:50 PM: Victory Flag-Waving in front of the Palazzo Pubblico.
  • 7:00 PM: Horses exit from the Entrone in the Courtyard of the Podestà.
  • From 5:40 PM to 6:40 PM: Via Dupré will be open for access to the Piazza until the maximum allowed capacity is reached.

The Palio of July 2nd

On July 2nd, the original date of the Palio, the Historical Parade took place in its entirety and therefore will not be repeated. However, due to sudden rain, the Palio was postponed to the following day, Wednesday, July 3rd. Unfortunately, bad weather again prevented the race on July 3rd, leading to another postponement to July 4th.

Siena is ready to once again host the most anticipated race of the year, with the hope that the Palio can finally take place today without any further interruptions, preserving a tradition that is deeply rooted in the city’s history.
