Siena is the first art city in Italy to receive certification as a sustainable destination, following the Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC-D) criteria.
This major achievement is the result of a process initiated by the Municipality of Siena at the end of 2021, culminating in February 2023 with the official recognition of the city as a model of sustainable tourism. Siena has successfully combined art, history, nature, and culture with a responsible and sustainable approach, promoting tourism that respects the environment while preserving local traditions.

Siena goes plastic-free: free drinking water throughout the Historic Center
In Siena’s historic center, both visitors and residents can access numerous “fontanini” (public fountains) providing free drinking water. Additionally, there are water stations where, for just a few cents, you can fill your bottles with still or sparkling water. These fountains help reduce plastic usage, supporting Siena’s goal of becoming a plastic-free city.
