Siena on foot: urban trekking ideas and routes to do all year round

Trekking Urbano

Siena is a city to discover on foot. Among its ups and downs, alleys and secret places, Siena offers countless and interesting itineraries in the city. An ideal destination for gentle tourism which has led it to be the first city to have given life to urban trekking. A different, healthy and fun way, which combines history, art, sport, and taste for a rediscovery of hidden and curious corners, and which is renewed every year, with a dedicated day. In fact, on October 31st, the National Urban Trekking Day is celebrated in Siena and throughout Italy. And even if this day can be an excellent opportunity to come to Siena and visit it, why not do it at other times too? Here we give you ideas and ideas for following urban trekking routes in the city of the Palio all year round!

Stages and routes

A Siena made of panoramas and breathtaking views along the Via Francigena which is also in the city. Following an 8 km long route that starts from Fontebranda and arrives in via delle Terme and which passes:

  • memorial park;
  • fortress;
  • via camollia, the first section of the urban route of the via francigena;
  • via Montanini and Vallerozzi;
  • Piazza San Francesco;
  • basilica of provenzano;
  • castellare degli ugurgieri – piazza salimbeni;
  • Via delle Terme – Fontebranda.

For those who prefer, however, an itinerary made up of alleys and gardens in which to discover a green Siena, just start from the heart of the city or Piazza Il Campo, and follow a route that touches on:

  • the Jewish ghetto
  • Via Pagliaresi
  • the basilica of the servants
  • ex psychiatric hospital
  • orto de’ pecci
  • fonte del casato
  • alley of the percennesi
  • Piazza Jacopo della Quercia

Still choosing a route made of art and nature but starting from another key place in the city, the Duomo, you can pass through:

  • fosso di sant’ansano
  • porta san marco
  • fonte delle monache
  • prato di sant’agostino
  • orto botanico
  • orti dei tolomei
  • piazza del campo.

But precisely because Siena is rich in places, gems and peculiarities to be discovered on foot, you can also discover it through music and theater by touching those that are the symbolic places of these art forms. See the Chigiana Music Academy, the headquarters of Siena Jazz, the Rinaldo Franci Institute and then the Theaters of Siena, Teatro dei Rinnovati and Teatro dei Rozzi.

Another idea for an urban trekking route is that of a Siena of water, among sources and fountains in the district but also valleys such as that of Follonica, concluding the tour, perhaps, with a visit to the Water Museum above the Fonte di Pescaia . Or with a visit to the Bottini which cross the city underground and which tell of ingenuity and connection with blue gold.
